I've been trying really hard lately to incorporate more vegetables into our diet. I know they're really good for you, and as I keep telling Blue, I want to raise our children to both like them and recognize the nutritional value of vegetables. (Side thought: when/how do children decide that vegetables are the most disgusting things on the planet? Is it a built-in aversion or is it thrust upon them by their friends/television/movies?)
However, this becomes really difficult when one of the adults seems to dislike vegetables almost as much as many children do. Yes, Blue can be a picky eater, and one of the things he likes the least is vegetables. Particularly broccoli.
On Wednesday night as I was making dinner, I informed Blue that I'd be adding broccoli to our pasta dish to increase the nutritional value of the meal. I could tell he didn't like the idea at all, and he told me I had to chop it up into the tiniest pieces possible to disguise its presence. I didn't know how much this would help, since the green color would give it away, but I minced the broccoli to a pulp and added it to the pasta sauce. I decided that it looked a lot like pesto and since there was already basil in the sauce it would be hard to tell the difference.
As we sat down to eat, Blue offered to say the prayer. It started off pretty normal, thanking Heavenly Father for the good day and all that, but then came this line:
"Thank you for the food and that there are vegetables in it."
What a silly man I married.

ReplyDeleteI decided to change my comment. Yes, you did marry a silly man! How did he like the pasta?
ReplyDeleteWhen we finally figured out that J's picky eating had to do with his sensory stuff, it started making more sense. He feels textures and stimulation in his mouth more than normal. Mixing food textures is risky business in our kitchen (like, pasta with broccoli). Melted cheese is the nastiest thing on earth: way too rubbery. We even buy him special toothbrushes made out of boar hair because nylon is too hard.
I'm sure Blue is grateful to you for chopping that broccoli into a pulp. Good luck in the kitchen!
